Initial Permits: CCW Foundations fulfills 8-hours of your 16-hour training requirement. You must also take Paladin's Basic Pistol class for the additional 8-hours.  You can take the classes in either order. DO NOT sign up for a "Permit Modification" ticket if you enroll in the Initial Permit class. There is no extra charge for up to 3 pistols.

Renewals:  CCW Foundations fulfills the 8-hour training requirement. DO NOT sign up for a "Permit Modification" ticket  if you enroll as a renewal. There is no extra charge for up to 3 pistols.

Permit Modifications:  Arrive at 12:30 p.m. for your qualification to add another pistol to your existing permit. You will be done at approximately 2:00 p.m. You don't need to pay for a modification if you are already enrolled in the full CCW Foundations class.

This class covers the state-mandated material for CCW permit holders:

  • Firearm safety, handling, shooting technique, and safe storage
  • Legal methods to transport firearms and securing firearms in vehicles
  • Laws governing where permitholders may carry firearms
  • Laws regarding the permissible use of a firearm and the permissible use of lethal force in self-defense
  • Mental health and mental health resources
  • Live-fire qualification (practice qualification only for Contra Costa County Sheriff applicants; official qualification will be conducted by the Sheriff)

Required Equipment:

  • Ear protection
  • Pistols to be listed on your permit with at least two magazines for each pistol
  • Outside-the-waistband holster for each pistol (see our blog post on selecting the proper holster)
  • At least 50 rounds of ammunition per pistol

You must have an outside-the-waistband holster for each pistol used in the live-fire qualification.  Inside-the-waistband, appendix or SERPA holsters (index finger retention systems) are not allowed on the range. If you come with a deficient holster, you will have to reschedule your live-fire portion of class for an additional $100 fee. No exceptions.
